Unlocking the Power of Accessibility: Garaventa Lift’s Impact in Surrey

We at Garaventa Lift feel privileged to express our heartfelt gratitude to the City of Surrey for showcasing us in the Invest Surrey Local Business Spotlight. This recognition serves as a testament to our meaningful and valuable journey in Surrey spanning over the past four decades.

Pioneering Accessibility Solutions Worldwide

Garaventa Lift’s roots stretch back to 1928 in the Swiss Alps, where founder Karl Garaventa constructed his first aerial tramway for logging purposes. Fast forward to the 1970s when we secured the contract for the iconic Grouse Mountain Skyride in Vancouver, and the natural beauty and economic potential of Surrey left an indelible impression on us, prompting the establishment of our North American headquarters here.

Post-Vietnam War, our focus shifted to accessibility solutions, identifying a critical need for veterans returning home with disabilities. In 1978, we installed the first residential wheelchair lift in North America, a proactive move well ahead of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Acquired by Savaria Corporation in 2018, our collaboration has propelled us to become a global leader, offering an extensive portfolio of accessibility products and a robust distribution network.

Cultural Insights Driving Innovation

Understanding the diverse perspectives on accessibility worldwide is at the core of our innovation. Blending price points, codes, regulations, and cultural attitudes, we design solutions tailored to local markets. With a global workforce reflecting diverse cultures, our designs are informed by critical insights into nuanced cultural expectations.

Custom Solutions with a Global Impact

Our product lines have expanded significantly over the years, matching our growing reputation. Each design project is custom-made, ensuring it precisely fits the unique needs of our clients. From the Beijing and Vancouver Olympics to Wimbledon and the Burj Khalifa, our lifts have made the world’s most iconic venues more accessible.

Choosing Surrey for Growth and Impact

Purposefully choosing Surrey over other cities was a strategic decision for us. Beyond its strategic location, cultural diversity, and skilled labor force, Surrey offered us a platform to build cool solutions that make people’s lives easier. Expanding within the Campbell Heights industrial park, we developed a state-of-the-art manufacturing center, leveraging the area’s prime amenities.

For over 40 years, Garaventa Lift has been an advocate for global innovation in Surrey, contributing to the city’s status as a favorable destination for foreign direct investment.

MCI Elevators Secures November’s Project of the Month

Garaventa Lift is proud to recognize the outstanding achievement of MCI Elevators for winning the November Project of the Month. Their dedicated work on a craftsman-style home in Washougal, Washington, which included the installation of the Elvoron MR elevator, exemplifies a perfect balance of functionality and aesthetics.

This project was quite challenging, as the house featured an open-concept design with unique architectural elements such as large wooden beams and expansive windows that showcased stunning views of the Pacific Northwest. However, MCI Elevators, in collaboration with the general contractor, not only met but exceeded expectations by proposing and implementing an all-glass car with 3-speed glass doors, which enhanced the home’s overall visual appeal.

MCI Elevators did an excellent job with the Elvoron MR elevator project, which was completed successfully. Their innovative and creative approach helped them overcome technical complexities. They introduced a rail wall and front openings to support the 3-speed sliding doors, which also enhanced the overall appearance of the elevator. Garaventa Lift and their dealers are proud to have worked with MCI Elevators on this project, which reflects their high standards of innovation and quality. We look forward to continuing to work towards better accessibility and design. Congratulations, MCI Elevators!

Exclusive Interview: A Conversation with Vince Sciamanna

Garaventa Lift North America is deeply committed to providing accessibility and mobility solutions. Recently, our president, Vince Sciamanna, sat down for an exclusive interview with Industry Today magazine, where he passionately shared our company’s mission to enhance the comfort and independence of individuals with diverse mobility needs. With roots dating back to 1928, we have become a global leader, and our mission goes beyond business- we strive to transform lives.

A Legacy of Accessibility

Garaventa began building cable cars in 1928. Today, we provide accessibility solutions, following the Americans with Disabilities Act. We create innovative solutions that make access easier for people in various settings. Our ski lift technology allows for the creation of smaller versions that offer easy stair navigation. This innovation extends to wheelchair-accessible commercial building elevators and private residential elevators, contributing to a more inclusive world.

Affordable Accessibility for All

Vince emphasizes that our commitment to accessibility extends to people from all walks of life. It is a misconception that personal elevators are only affordable for the wealthy. We offer solutions that cater to various budgets, with elevators available at prices ranging from about $25,000 to $200,000. This makes them accessible to a wide range of clients. The cost of an elevator depends on factors such as its size, weight, the number of floors it serves, and its total travel distance. Our objective is to make accessibility a reality for everyone.

Custom Solutions and Quality Assurance

Garaventa Lift offers customized accessibility solutions with a focus on end-user safety and satisfaction. We work closely with architects and builders to tailor each project to meet the unique needs and characteristics of the home or building. Our components and expert designs ensure a reliable, safe installation with a seven-year warranty.

Stunning CPL installed at the Rise Again at the Queens Marque, Halifax

The Rise Again project aimed to be more than just a public space; it strived to be a symbol of inclusivity and universal accessibility. Central to this vision was the Garaventa CPL, designed to cater to individuals with mobility challenges, ensuring they can access the waterfront area with ease and dignity. Lawtons, known for its commitment to accessibility, partnered with Rob Murphy and his experienced R&D team, renowned for their groundbreaking work in designing user-centric solutions. Together, they embarked on an ambitious journey to create a state-of-the-art installation that would elevate accessibility standards in the region.

The successful installation of the Garaventa CPL at Rise Again lies in its intricate synchronization of the CPL door and the outer mirrored storm door. One of the primary challenges faced by the team was to ensure that both doors worked harmoniously to provide a seamless user experience. The CPL door was designed to open and close effortlessly, offering smooth ingress and egress for users. Meanwhile, the outer mirrored storm door remained an integral part of the tower, blending elegantly with the surrounding environment when not in use.

Rob Murphy’s R&D team played a critical role in perfecting this synchronization, ensuring that the CPL door’s operation did not interfere with the storm door’s functionality. Through meticulous testing and engineering, the team achieved a sophisticated system where the outer mirrored storm door would glide open when required, providing an additional layer of protection against adverse weather conditions. This thoughtful integration of aesthetics and functionality exemplifies the team’s commitment to delivering an exceptional user experience.

The Garaventa CPL installation at Rise Again has not only redefined accessibility standards but also set an example for future architectural projects across the globe. Its seamless integration and user-centric design demonstrate the possibilities of creating inclusive public spaces without compromising on aesthetics or functionality.

As visitors marvel at the Rise Again project, they are left with a lasting impression of a city that places inclusivity at the forefront of its urban planning. The installation serves as an inspiring vision of the future, where innovative partnerships between industry leaders and visionary minds can transform public spaces into beacons of accessibility and equity.
