July POM Goes to GUSA Illinois

Garaventa Artira provides access to school gymnasium

Grand Ridge School

Designed to fit a tight lower landing

The installation of a Garaventa GSL Artira inclined platform lift at Grand Ridge Grade School in Grand Ridge, Illinois has been named the Garaventa Lift Project of the Month for July, 2015.

The lift was installed to solve a common accessibility problem in older schools – that of a gymnasium located at the bottom of a short flight of stairs. Typically, these areas are not serviced by elevators. To make matters more challenging, often there are very tight clearances at the upper and lower landings, such as was the case at Grand Ridge Grade School. The answer was an Artira designed with a drop-down lower landing configuration.

25 Years of the ADA

1979-Letter-from-Wes

RFQ from 1979

On July 26th, the Americans with Disabilities Act turned 25 years old. When it was initially enacted in 1990, it was a watershed moment in the world of designing spaces for use by the public and for the advancement of barrier-free accessibility.

Garaventa Lifts were already available over ten years before the ADA was enacted. Before federal legislation required barrier-free solutions, Garaventa was there, pioneers in “Creating An Accessible World”.

Shown is correspondence from Wes Jones in 1979, inquiring about a wheelchair lift. Wes is still a dealer for Garaventa Lift, 36 years later. Wes leads the team at Lift-Aids, Inc. of Euless, Texas, one of 15 Top Perfomers for Garaventa Lift in 2014.
